UPVC doors are fitted on most front and back doors in modern UK homes, and the euro-profile cylinder lock used on them is one of the most common points of forced entry. Why UPVC Locks Need Specialist Attention

Unlike a traditional mortice lock where the mechanism is inside the door, a UPVC door relies on three separate components working together:

1. The euro cylinder — the keyable component that you insert the key into
2. The gearbox — the central driven unit that controls all the locking hooks and bolts
3. The handle — which transmits the turning force to the gearbox

A failure in any one of these can render the door either impossible to lock or impossible to open. Each failure mode has a different fix, and correctly diagnosing which component has failed is the most important part of the job.

The Lock-Snapping Risk

Standard euro cylinders have a well-documented weakness: they can be snapped at the outer end using simple tools available from any hardware shop. This is now one of the most common methods of burglary on UPVC-door properties.

The solution is straightforward: fit an anti-snap cylinder. These are designed with a sacrificial break point that keeps the inner mechanism — and the lock’s security function — intact even when the outer section is snapped off.

We fit anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill cylinders as standard on every UPVC cylinder replacement. We do not offer standard (vulnerable) cylinders as an option unless a customer specifically requests it and acknowledges the risk in writing.

Multipoint Mechanism Failures

The most common multipoint issues we attend:

• Gearbox failure — internal gear strip causes the hook bolts to stop extending
• Mushroom cam failure — the cam that drives the top and bottom bolts strips out
• Handle spindle wear — the square spindle through the handle wears oval, losing positive engagement
• Compression seal stiffness — the door seals expand in warm weather, making the handle very stiff to lift

Door Alignment and Adjustment

Many UPVC lock problems are actually door alignment problems. A door that has dropped or a frame that has settled slightly can cause the locking hooks to miss their keeps, creating the impression of a lock failure when the mechanism itself is fine. We check and adjust door alignment as part of every multipoint service call.
